Veterans-Focused Events 

Legacy of Valor is a campaign that rallies our community to honor veterans, inspire patriotism and pass freedom on to others. A mosaic of community-driven partnerships will educate, build enthusiasm and focus our community to honor veterans and their families throughout campaign and beyond.

This list also includes additional veterans-focused events outside of the Legacy of Valor campaign.

Venice Museum and Archives | April - November 2013

“Kentucky Military Institute: Celebrating 37 years in Venice," is an exhibition that highlights local heroes from KMI. Objects on display include military uniforms, photographs, and memorabilia.

★ Habitat for Humanity | June 2013 - April 2014

Our region's Habitat for Humanity affiliates will coordinate various veterans repair projects.

A collaboration among Habitat for Humanity Sarasota, South Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte and Desoto counties

 

The Ringling | June 21 - October 27, 2013

“Witness to War,” is an exhibition of photographs from the Ringling's permanent collection and the Institute on World War II and the Human Experience at Florida State University. It features the work of soldier-photographers who documented their first-hand experience.

Veterans Benefits Seminar | June 28, 2013

Retirement community Alderman Oaks will host a veterans benefits seminar from 2pm to 3:30 pm. The seminar features Linda Gould, Legacy of Valor Coordinator; Glenn Herman, Sarasota National Cemetery Representative; and Terry Acton, Sarasota County Veterans Service Officer. Ellenton Ruby Tuesday & State College of Florida | July 6, 13, 20 & 27 2013

The Ruby Tuesday in Ellenton will donate 20 percent of funds raised on July 6, 13, 20 and 27 to State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota’s Veterans Collegiate Association, as part of the restaurant company’s “Veterans Helping Veterans” initiative. The money will be used to help veteran students with books and school supplies while they are waiting for reimbursement from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. To participate, customers must present the event flyer, available here, to their servers on the designated days. 

★ The Ringling Witness to War Gallery Walk and Talk | July 11, 2013

The Ringling's Witness to War Gallery Walk and Talk, which begins at 6:00 pm, will explore the dual nature of photography's crucial role in official documentation of events of war as well as personal stories of soldiers who captured the images. Free for Museum Members.

Fall Music Series | Marie Selby Botanical Gardens | October 6, 2013

During its Fall Music Series, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens will feature The First Brass during the "Red, White and Brass: American Salute" concert. Veterans may visit at a discounted rate of $5.00 (standard entry fee is $17.00).

 

Sarasota Military Academy | October - December 2013

Wreaths Across America places remembrance wreaths on every grave at Sarasota National Cemetery followed by a ceremony that takes place on December 14.

Heroes on the Water is a boat building for veterans by a Master Boat Builder. This will also incorporate an art exhibit and boat launch celebration, which will occur throughout the month.

Veterans Artist Program Exhibit and Palmetto Heritage day- This will incorporate Victory Gardens, Letters to the Troops as well as an art exhibit featuring veteran artists.

Freedom is not Free, is a large freestanding mural competition amongst community artists. The winning artist can make a prize donation to the Veterans Service Organization of their choosing.

La Musica | April 15, 2013

Veterans are invited to watch the video production of four musicians during the International Chamber Music Festival concert. Sarasota County Schools will share the taped performance with students.

The Hermitage Artist Retreat | Stories on the Beach | June 7, 2013

Novelists Josh Barkan and Richard Currey, who has been recognized by Vietnam Veterans, will be reading from their work and will be joined by Ivan Talijancic, a multidisciplinary performance artist, who will tell stories of his international work as an artist, choreographer, designer and filmmaker. The Hermitage campus opens at 6:30 pm for historic home tours. At 7:30 pm, Stories on the Beach will begin, followed by a sunset at 8:24 pm. The Hermitage is located at 6660 Manasota Beach Road, Englewood. The event is free and open to the public. Please bring beach chairs and refreshments to enjoy.

Viewpoint: Photographing Conflict | The Historic Asolo Theater | June 15, 2013

This program, as part of The Ringling's Witness to War exhibition, will touch on some of the issues surrounding photography that transcend generations and conflicts. Kenny Irby, Poynter Institute senior faculty member for visual journalism and diveristy, will lead the lecture, which begins at 10:30 am.
